Institutional information. Government and Management Organs
Fira de Barcelona is a public consortium, with private business management and autonomy, made up of the Catalan Government, the Barcelona City Council and the Official Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Services and Navigation of Barcelona.
These institutions designate the members of the General Council, which is chaired by the Mayor of Barcelona and approves the entity’s general guidelines, budgets, and economic results. The Catalan Government and the Chamber of Commerce hold the two vice-presidencies.
On proposal of the Chamber of Commerce and, in agreement with the other institutions, the Governing Board is appointed, composed of seven or nine entrepreneurs, from which the president is chosen. It guides the strategy and supervises the management of the institution. Both the members of the General Council and the members of the Governing Board are non-remunerated positions.
The Executive Committee, headed by the General Manager, develops and implements the strategic lines and institutional and corporate policies of Fira de Barcelona, designs the commercial action, coordinates the different services and makes proposals aimed at innovation, expansion, promotion and growth of the institution.

Financial results
More and larger events
Despite a global socio-economic environment that was expected to be difficult, the balance of 2023 was a very positive one. Fira de Barcelona registered the best results in its history with a turnover of more than 257 million euros, an Ebitda of 42.4 million euros, thanks to the intense activity at the three venues, in addition to the activity carried out abroad.
The programming, holding and growth of events at Fira’s facilities were not significantly affected by the war in Ukraine, the most recent conflict in the Gaza Strip or other elements that have an impact on the economy, such as the energy crisis, the effects of climate change or social and political instability in other countries.
Having also overcome the views, often held by the media, which considered face-to-face professional meetings as obsolete and to be replaced by virtual events, it was proven that contact between supply and demand in all economic sectors is more efficient face-to-face. This meant not only that more events were held than initially planned when the calendar for the year was drawn up, but also that they were larger, more international and with a higher level of recruitment by the organisers.
In 2023, more than 270 events were held at the Montjuïc, Gran Via and CCIB venues, including trade fairs, congresses, conventions and various other events. As mentioned above, this activity generated record revenues of 257 million euros, 28.5% more than forescasted and 21.4% more than in 2022. The increase in Ebitda was 15.7%.
By business lines, 22% of revenue corresponds to shows organised by the company itself, 45% to external shows, 24% to conventions and congresses and 9% to international and other activities.
The shows organised directly by Fira include Piscina & Wellness Barcelona, Automobile Barcelona, Smart City Expo World Congress, Expoquimia and Equiplast, Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week, Construmat, Saló d’Ensenyament, Caravaning and Ocasió.
As for the shows and events managed by external organisers, all forecasts were exceeded and there was a significant increase in volume, especially VMware Explore, In-Cosmetics, CPHI, ISE, Seafood Expo Global, Shoptalk Europe and the International Transport Union Summit (UITP), among others.
Special mention should again be made of MWC Barcelona, which, according to its organisers, increased its surface area and number of exhibitors and visitors from before the pandemic. It is also worth highlighting the events that were held but not initially planned in the already full 2023 trade fair calendar, such as SAP Saphire, HPE Discover and MagicCon, together with many other congresses, conventions and other smaller shows.
