The CIRSE Congress on Interventional Radiology will visit the CCIB together with over 5,000 professionals
Barcelona will become the European epicentre of Interventional Radiology on Saturday. The Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB), managed by Fira de Barcelona, will host the annual Congress of the CIRSE (Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe) with more than 5,000 specialists from all over the world, who’ll discuss and present the latest breakthroughs and innovations in this field. It will be one of this year’s major medical events at the CCIB, which intends to host over 40 congresses and events in the last four months of the year, 13 of which will be devoted to the health sector.
From 10 to 14 September the CIRSE Congress will return to the CCIB, the venue where it was held in 2013, 2016 and 2019. With the slogan “Science for people” and a hybrid (in-person and digital) format, it will feature over 700 scientific sessions conducted by the finest European experts, advocate improvements to patient-centred care and highlight the importance of research as the basis of scientific evidence. In addition, the SERVEI (Spanish Society of Vascular and Interventional Radiology), the host of the congress, will promote this discipline and its relevance for the present and future of medical practice.
“Although there have been well-established VIR (Vascular and Interventional Radiology) Units at the most important public and private hospitals in Spain for over 30 years, many doctors and managers of these hospitals are currently unaware of this speciality”, declared Dr Mariano Magallanes, president of the SERVEI and the local congress committee, a situation he believes is partly due to the lack of official recognition of VIR in Spain.
Vascular and interventional radiology is a sub-speciality of radiology that permits minimally invasive image-guided treatments that are less aggressive and safer than conventional surgery, thus significantly reducing patients’ recovery time. As Dr Magallanes explained, VIR can treat a growing list of pathologies, “ranging from arterial diseases such as aneurysms and varicose veins to uterine fibroids, prostatic hyperplasia and cancer, by means of minimally invasive treatment. Similarly, emergency VIR procedures such as interventions to stop bleeding and treatments of strokes, sepsis and pulmonary thromboembolism have increased in recent years”.
A photographic exhibition open to the public in Barcelona
In parallel, within the framework of the slogan “Science for people”, the SERVEI has organised a photographic and informative exhibition on vascular and interventional radiology that will be open to the public during the congress at the Diagonal Mar Shopping Centre in Barcelona, located just a few yards from the CCIB. The aim is to bring VIR closer to the public through images, with 12 panels showing striking photographs of a device, intervention or person related to the procedures performed by interventional radiologists, accompanied by a text and a QR code with more detailed information.
Over 40 events at the CCIB during the last four months of the year
CIRSE 2022 will be the first of the major medical congresses to be held at the CCIB during the last four months of the year. From now until December, the calendar of the venue located in the Forum includes over 40 events, 13 of which will be medical and scientific ones, such as the international congresses on Paediatric Oncology (SIOP), Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and Cancer Treatments (ENA) and the European ones on Breast Cancer (EBCC), Paediatric Societies (EAPS) and Nuclear Medicine (EANM), among many others, as well as events related to the technology, tourism and entertainment sectors.
