After closing its most global edition yesterday, Smart City Expo World Congress is already preparing its international calendar for 2025, with events to be held in Brazil, the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, China, and Malaysia, among others. In this way, Fira de Barcelona extends the success of this event and the opportunities for innovation and business it generates in cities around the world.

The world’s leading smart city event organised by Fira de Barcelona, Smart City Expo World Congress, concluded yesterday with the largest edition held to date and is already working not only to continue growing in Barcelona but also to multiply its impact worldwide. Among the various international editions already scheduled for next year, the main novelty will be Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) from 17 to 19 September, which will be the first event Fira organises in Southeast Asia.

Additionally, in 2025, the sixth edition of Smart City Expo Curitiba (25-27 March); the fourth of Smart City Expo USA, the second in New York (2-3 April); the tenth of one of the most established events in the international calendar of the Barcelona trade fair institution, Smart City Expo Latam Congress, in Mexico, which will return to the city of Puebla (10-12 June); Smart City Expo Santiago del Estero (25-26 June), which will hold its fourth edition; the third consecutive edition in Colombia, this time in Cartagena de Indias (8-9 October); and the second of Smart City Riyadh, in Saudi Arabia, and Smart City Expo China, with dates yet to be confirmed, as well as others to be announced soon.

The Director of International Business at Fira de Barcelona, Ricard Zapatero, stated that “more and more cities around the world want to host international editions of Smart City Expo. The success of this event globally reinforces Fira’s positioning in the world and helps to drive urban innovation to build a more sustainable future focused on the well-being of its citizens.”

A record-breaking 2024

2025 will take over from this year, which has been one of the most intense in terms of Smart City Expo’s international activity, with editions in New York, Curitiba (Brazil), Mérida (Mexico), Bogotá (Colombia), Santiago de Chile, Santiago del Estero (Argentina), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), and Hangzhou (China), as well as the first Tomorrow.Mobility in Mexico and Tomorrow.Blue Economy in Brazil.

As part of the internationalisation of Fira de Barcelona’s business, the institution holds other events abroad. Thus, this year, in addition to the Smart City editions, there are Alimentos Cuba, IOT Solutions Congress Brazil, and Alimentaria Chengdu, and for next year, Mexico Hospitality Expo powered by Hostelco, from 6 to 8 May, and the second edition of Alimentaria Chengdu, in early September, are planned.

This activity contributes to the opening of new markets for Catalan and Spanish companies and, at the same time, allows the organisational experience of Fira de Barcelona to be disseminated globally, thus consolidating itself as one of the main trade fair operators worldwide.
