The event adds €120m directly to the local economy with nearly 2,000 exhibitors and 40,000 attendees from 170 countries.
CPHI, the world’s largest pharma event comes to Barcelona next week
The world’s largest pharmaceutical event arrives next week at Fira de Barcelona with nearly 2,000 exhibitors, representing thousands of pharmaceutical companies, and the expected attendance of more than 40,000 industry executives from 170 countries. Due to its size and global scope, CPHI Barcelona – which will occupy the entire Gran Via venue from 24 to 26 October – will have an economic impact of more than 120 million euros in the Catalan capital, according to independent analysis, especially on the city’s hotel, restaurants, transport, and leisure sectors.
The trade fair, which was already held in Barcelona in 2016, brings together the world’s leading and most innovative pharmaceutical companies and drug developers, together with consultants, and technology and service providers. The event includes both a trade exhibition and a congress where the main challenges for the future of the sector will be discussed. The agenda will include topics such as the development of formulations for new therapies, product innovations, bioproduction, pharma 4.0, quality management, circular economy in the sector, patient-centric development, hiring diverse talent and establishing business partnerships for success.
CPHI Barcelona -– widely known as the ‘heart of pharma’ – sees billions of euros of contracts signed each year and is the genesis of many of the industry’s biggest manufacturing partnerships – with every part of the pharmaceutical development and manufacturing supply chain in attendance. The event plays a key role in fostering partnerships between companies developing both generics and innovative medicine globally – including many of the Covid vaccines of recent years.
Significantly for Catalonia’s rapidly growing biotech and pharma manufacturing sector, the event also brings with it vital contacts, investment companies and global pharma that will be invaluable in accelerating the region’s growth. In fact, just last month Barcelona was selected as Europe’s 2nd best destination for biotechnology investments by global pharma executives in the CPHI annual survey. This report also highlights Spain as the sixth country in the world with the highest pharma growth potential by 2024.
Innovation to produce pharmaceuticals
Organised by Informa Markets, CPHI Barcelona will showcase the latest innovations in drug production, from ingredients and generics to capsules and excipients, machinery, packaging and biopharmaceuticals.
New this year, CPHI is launching a special start-up marketplace at the event, specifically designed to help accelerate the development of emerging companies in the pharma and healthcare industry, facilitating the presentation of their innovations and value propositions to investors and the international pharmaceutical community in attendance.
“We are delighted to bring global pharma supply chain to Barcelona. Our last visit here was hugely popular with our attendees, it’s a fantastic venue and the city is home to one of Europe’s most thriving pharma and biotech industries. We hope our event makes not only a significant economic contribution this week but has a lasting positive legacy for companies in Spain over the next year,” commented Adam Andersen, executive vice-president pharma at Informa Markets.
For his part, Constantí Serralonga, CEO of Fira de Barcelona, stresses the importance of CPHI’s return to the Catalan capital “the holding of a global event of this size and economic impact is excellent news for the city, but it is also a valuable opportunity for business, international connections and development for the pharma industry in Spain and for the local ecosystem of biotech and healthcare startups”. At the same time, Serrallonga recalls that hosting CPHI again confirms “the increasingly recognised international positioning of Fira as a venue for top-level global events, especially in the medical and technological fields”.
Specifically, in addition to CPHI, Fira’s venues will host more than twenty medical trade fairs and congresses in 2023. Among those held this year are Infarma, the medicines and parapharmacy trade show, the World Parkinson’s Congress, the World Congress on Gastrointestinal Cancer and the EUSEM on emergency medicine, among many others.
